Windsurf usage limits explained
What this means in practice
- A long session on a frontier model can use a day's budget much faster than short prompts on a SWE model, because the budget is token-based.
- Because the daily quota is more than 1/7 of the weekly one, a heavy day can still leave room later in the week, but several heavy days in a row can hit the weekly cap first.
- Before buying extra usage, check whether a free or SWE model can do the routine part of the task.
How do Windsurf usage limits work now?
Since March 2026, Windsurf (now called Devin Desktop in Cognition's docs) uses quotas instead of prompt credits. Each plan has a daily and a weekly usage budget, measured by the tokens each request uses. Cost per token depends on the model, and free models don't count against the quota. docs.devin.ai checked 2026-10-22
When does the Windsurf quota reset?
Daily and weekly, based on the calendar date. The daily quota is more than 1/7 of the weekly quota, so people who also work weekends can use the full weekly amount. docs.devin.ai checked 2026-10-22
How big is the quota on each plan?
Cognition doesn't publish numbers. The pricing page describes Free as a light quota, Pro as increased quotas and Max as significantly higher quotas. devin.ai checked 2026-10-22
What happens when I hit the limit?
On Free you wait for the next daily or weekly reset. On Pro, Teams or Max you can buy extra usage, billed at API list prices for the model you use. Priority and fast variants cost more. Quota limits never cap extra usage. docs.devin.ai checked 2026-10-22
Where do I check my remaining quota?
In the usage meter in Devin Desktop, under Settings > Usage & limits, or on your plan page at app.devin.ai/settings/plans. docs.devin.ai checked 2026-10-22
How do I make the quota last longer?
Cognition's own advice: be precise and cut unneeded context, use the lower-cost SWE models (such as SWE-1.7 or SWE-1.6) for routine tasks, avoid long sessions when a quick prompt will do, and stick to one frontier model so requests reuse the cache. Pro includes free use of SWE-2. docs.devin.ai checked 2026-10-22
I paid $15/mo for Pro before. Did my price change?
No. Cognition says existing $15/mo Pro subscribers keep that price indefinitely on the new quota system, and existing Teams seats keep $30/seat/mo. docs.devin.ai checked 2026-10-22
