Make Cursor usage last longer

On current Cursor plans, paid tiers get one usage pool for Cursor's own models that refreshes weekly. Third-party models are not in the pool. Different models draw from the pool at different rates. Each tip below cites the official doc it comes from (read 2026-10-20). We don't estimate how much each one saves; vendors don't publish that.

  1. Check your pool and reset date

Remaining usage and the next reset date are in editor settings and under Usage at grok.com/dashboard.

  2. Choose cheaper Cursor models for routine work

Rates Cursor lists for its own models (per million tokens, input/output, for usage beyond the pool): Composer 2.5 $0.50/$2.50; Grok 4.7 $2/$6. Cursor says models draw from the pool at different rates.

  3. Avoid Fast variants unless needed

Fast variants are listed at higher rates, e.g. Composer 2.5 (Fast) $3/$15 vs $0.50/$2.50; Grok 4.7 (Fast) $4/$12 vs $2/$6.

Model picker → turn Fast off

  4. Watch long context

Grok 4.7 input over 256k tokens is billed at 2x standard rates (up to 500k).

    # start a new chat instead of growing one huge thread

  5. Know what third-party models cost

Claude, GPT and Gemini are not in the pool. On Premium and above they bill at API list price from prepaid credit.

    # check the model table before picking a third-party model

  6. Exclude irrelevant files with .cursorignore

Uses .gitignore syntax. Cursor says excluding irrelevant parts of large codebases gives more accurate file discovery (Agent, Tab, Inline Edit, @ mentions).

    # .cursorignore
    dist/
    *.log
    **/logs
    node_modules/

  7. Scope rules instead of always applying them

Rule contents are added to the start of the model context. Always Apply rules go into every chat; rules with globs attach only when matching files are in context. Cursor suggests keeping rules under 500 lines.

    ---
    description: API validation
    globs: src/api/**/*.ts
    alwaysApply: false
    ---
